Career Research

You will find many of these tools useful in your self-discovery and career research:

  • FOCUS OnlineFOCUS Online: (enter Access Code NYIT) An online assessment and occupational exploration tool. (**This is the new version of Focus. If you already have a Focus account, you will need to create a new account and then choose the option to import your data to the new system)
  • O*NET, developed and maintained by the U.S. Department of Labor, features constantly updated information for more than 1,000 job titles. It lists characteristics necessary for specific career areas related to interests, work values, and abilities as well as a list of knowledge and skills (i.e. critical thinking, writing, etc.) needed for specific jobs. All you need to do is click on "What It Takes."
  • What Can I Do With My Major? is a listing of majors linked to potential careers (pdfs).
  • Professional Associations and Other Resources organized by field of study to assist you in your career research.
  • Job and Internship Search Engines organized by industry.
     

Online career search tools include:

  • Career SearchCareerSearch: A research database of more than 4 million employers worldwide (including contact information, Web sites, maps, competitors), searchable by industry, location, and key words. You can create an account using NYIT's referral ID: NYIT1955. Before you get started check out the online tutorials.
  • UniworldUniworld: Two multinational business directories that allow you to search for U.S. firms operating in foreign countries and foreign firms operating in the U.S. Contact information contains headquarters, branches, subsidiaries, and affiliates.
  • Check out CareerTV, the first and only global television program and interactive website designed to help college students and young professionals develop long-lasting, successful careers.
  • Job Choices 2012: find resume samples, interview advice, and more.
  • Junglecampus.com brings you WetFeet Magazine. Each issue is packed with information to help undergrads get the careers they want with features including: interviewing advice, resume tips, recruiter Q&A’s, and inspirational profiles of young employees and entrepreneurs.
